Case
Four:
Making Technology Work for the Public Good |
| The
Problem: In an effort to achieve
widespread compliance with the Americans with Disabilities Act, a
major Bay Area city needed help identifying sidewalk paths of travel
that were noncompliant with ADA standards. |
The
PIW Solution: SMART Planning,
Decision Support and Organization Capacity Building
Over a two-year period, PIW worked with a team of field technicians
and Geographic Information System specialists to design a database
capable of handling complex field survey results. The survey identified
over 150,000 locations based on a matrix of condition type, severity,
and land usage. After an analysis of field survey findings, PIW created
a detailed recommendation report including a phased strategy to mitigate
noncompliant sidewalks. |
| The
Result: The analysis and report provided by PIW enabled
local decision makers to allocate available resources towards sidewalk
improvements. The newly created database will be used to continue
improving sidewalk conditions throughout the city. |
